 20세기 초 영국의 위대한 남극 탐험가 어니스트 섀클턴의 탐험선에서 이름을 딴 것으로 보인다.

( 어니스트 새클턴의 남극횡단은 실패로 끝났지만, 얼어버린 바다의 극한 상황에서 단 한 명의 대원도 사망하지 않고 귀환하였습니다. 이를 '위대한 실패'라고 칭하기도 합니다. 인듀어러스는 '인내'라는 뜻도 있습니다. )

 The Endurance had taken years to complete by launch date, it is a rotating ring encompassing 12 pods and one pod links to the main cockpit via a tube. The spacecraft was meant for interplanetary voyages but has been repurposed for this unprecedented interstellar expedition. The ship had hyper-sleep chambers for the crew's two-year journey from Earth to Saturn's orbit where the wormhole was discovered.
